Riot police took a break during a protest in Shifang on Tuesday.

Even the Chinese police get tired of cracking down on social unrest now and then! The only thing this break is missing is a ‘Kit Kat’ Bar.

At least the intense thunderstorm is brining a cool wind and mild temperatures to the furnace ( 大火炉) that is Nanjing.
Any advice is always appreciated, how did you find one to stay at? Hopefully this will be my next trip!
The mountain was really something to see! I was anticipating sort of a “same old, same old” hiking trip but the scenery was awesome. My pictures really don’t do it justice because it was overcast, raining, hot, sunny and all the other different types of mountain weather that one might expect. I’d suggest searching it on google to find better pictures than mine.
I didn’t get a red trucker hat with yellow Chinese characters from my Chinese tour. This was of course a source of disappointment. Also the tour I was on my with my lab-mates didn’t go to the small villages near HuangShan that are very pretty and famous. I would consider going back to see the Huizhou villages but alas my time in China is limited. There are so many places in this country I’d love to see but they are all so far apart that it will take years to see them.
Next week me and my lab-mates will take a trip to HuangShan (Yellow Mountain).
What I didn’t know what that we were booking through a travel agent/tour group. Ever since travelling in South East Asia I’ve always dreamed of joining one of these tours for numerous reasons and mostly comic relief.
I’ll add more when I think of it.
I wish i spoke more mandarin because I would have asked all these kind chinese folk one question, “What are you up to?”. I Imagine their explanation would be something along the lines of:
I’m just shopping for my [son/daughters] future [wife/husband] because they are working too much to find one themselves [and/or] I’m worried that they’ll die alone and have no kids….
WOW! What strange and different problems they have here in China. I’d have to say “Thanks but no thanks Mom”.
Basically this is a “Spouse Market” where parents & matchmaking agencies post personals for the people that include pictures, job, income (if its impressive), education and a whole lotta other stuff. The parents go around and talk to the other parents in to make a match. I don’t know what happens after but it certainly was cool to watch.
I think this angle really shows the maximum Asian’ness of my new Chinese haircut. Note the strange thinning in the side and back. It only cost me 15 元 ($2.40 CDN) and I got a hairwash, cut, re-hairwash, and blowdry so I’m not too upset. I washed out the fohawk ASAP so now all that remains is me wearing my 75 cent Honest Ed’s cap.
